As a trade or construction business grows, workwear stops being a one-off purchase and becomes an ongoing part of how your business runs. Getting it right matters — garments need to hold up to the job, look consistent across a growing crew, and get branded without blowing the budget every time you hire someone new. Here’s what to think through before you place an order.
More Than Hi-Vis: What “Workwear” Actually Covers
Hi-vis is usually the first thing that comes to mind, but most trade and construction crews need a mix of garments depending on the role and the season:
- Hi-vis polos and shirts for on-site presence and client-facing visits
- Trade trousers and shorts built for durability
- Jumpers and softshell jackets for Perth’s cooler mornings and winter months
- Everyday polos for quoting, site visits and office-facing work
All of it comes from trusted trade brands built for Australian conditions. If hi-vis compliance is your main concern — AS/NZS 4602.1 requirements, reflective tape and safe logo placement — we’ve covered that in detail in our hi-vis embroidery buyer’s guide. This post is about everything else that goes into kitting out a crew properly.
Choosing the Right Fabric and Fit for the Job
Not every trade needs the same garment. Concreters and tilers put trousers through a lot more abrasion than an electrician quoting a job in someone’s living room, and a crew working outdoors through a Perth summer needs breathable fabric a lot more than one working mostly indoors. A few things worth matching to your team:
- Heavier, reinforced fabric for trades with more wear and tear on the job
- Lighter, breathable options for crews working outdoors in summer heat
- Layering pieces (jumpers, softshells) for early starts and cooler months
- Consistent sizing across the whole crew, with mixed sizes available in the one order
A crew that all looks the part — same garment, same fit, same branding — reads as a lot more professional on site than a mix of whatever everyone already owns.
Building a Consistent Look as Your Crew Grows
One of the most common headaches for growing trade businesses is keeping the branding consistent as the team expands. Because your logo is digitised once and kept on file, adding shirts for a new hire down the track doesn’t mean starting from scratch — it’s the same setup, same placement, same result, whether you’re ordering three shirts or thirty. That consistency matters more than it seems: mismatched logo placement or slightly different colours across old and new stock is a small thing that customers and site managers do notice.
What Actually Drives the Cost of Custom Workwear
Pricing for custom workwear comes down to three things: the garment brand and style, the decoration method (embroidery or print), and the quantity ordered — larger orders bring the per-item cost down. Our minimum order is just 10 items, so a small five-person crew can get properly branded gear without over-ordering stock they don’t need. We only consider customer-supplied (BYO) garments for orders of 50 or more items; for anything smaller, we supply the garments as part of the service.
Embroidery or Print for Everyday Workwear?
As a quick rule of thumb: embroidery is the better call for logos on polos, shirts and jackets that get washed hard and need to last, since stitched thread holds up to commercial laundering far better than a printed logo. Print tends to suit larger back designs or one-off event shirts where cost and design size matter more than long-term durability. We go into the full comparison — cost, durability, look and when each makes sense — in our Embroidery vs Screen Printing guide.
